Why have you chosen to run for the Ruth Strauss Foundation?
I became involved with RSF 3 years ago when the charity was given the opportunity to turn Lord’s #RedforRuth during the Ashes Test of 2019. I interviewed SAS at home, and edited the videos to help launch the amazing charity! I’ve always loved marathon running and when I was offered the opportunity to run for RSF I jumped at the chance…that was two years ago so the knees are creaking but hopefully I will get round in decent time!

What’s the thing you can’t run without?
Trainers…

What is the longest run you’ve done in training?
I did 20 miles on a treadmill last week which is fairly daft, but I was working in Bristol and didn’t want to get lost and have to contend with evil hills!

What do you enjoy about running?
I love the focus it gives me when having a target to aim for… plus the escape when out running I can forget about work etc.

What will you be thinking about to get you over the finishing line?
I will be replaying this year’s emotional mission video in my mind that helped RSF raise 1.2 million pounds at Lord’s… the bravery of the family members who spoke is a huge motivation.

Who do you think will make it across the finishing line first; you or Andrew Strauss 😉
I’ll be tracking SAS on the marathon app and will be annoyed if he beats me!

Why have you chosen to run for the Ruth Strauss Foundation?
Ruth was a hero and such a selfless person, I wanted to give back just like she did.

What’s the thing you can’t run without?
My little legs!

What is the longest run you’ve done in training?
Like my cricket career my preparation has been shocking, although did a half marathon yesterday, two weeks before!

What do you enjoy about running?
Nothing whatsoever in truth.

What will you be thinking about to get you over the finishing line?
My Maccy D’s and 8 San Miguel’s!

Who do you think will make it across the finishing line first; you or Andrew Strauss 😉
I would have all the money in the world on SAS.

Why have you chosen to run for the Ruth Strauss Foundation?
I have three daughters, two of whom are a similar age to Ruth and Andrew’s children. When Ruth died I felt such sadness for the sons she’d left behind. I’d like to think if anything happened to me, there’d be the support of incredible charities like the RSF to look out for my daughters and help them to get through the tough times.

What’s the thing you can’t run without?
My Jelly Beans!!

What is the longest run you’ve done in training?
22.5 miles

What do you enjoy about running?

Why have you chosen to run for the Ruth Strauss Foundation?
I’m a huge cricket fan but aside from that, I just think it’s the most fantastic cause. I have two sons of a similar age to Ruth and Andrew and I genuinely can’t comprehend what they went through and how they dealt with Ruth’s death.

What’s the thing you can’t run without?
Water

What is the longest run you’ve done in training?
I’ve run 20 miles twice.

What do you enjoy about running?
The fact that it just clears your mind and gives to time to think.

What will you be thinking about to get you over the finishing line?
I’ll be thinking about Ruth, her family, and also all of the fantastic people who have sponsored me to help with my motivation through the long months of training.

Who do you think will make it across the finishing line first; you or Andrew Strauss 😉
Great question! My heart says hopefully it will be quite close, my head says definitely Sir Andrew!

Michael O'Connor

Michael O'Connor

Why have you chosen to run for the Ruth Strauss Foundation?
I have chosen RSF because Andrew thought it would be a good thing for me to do! I’ve also chosen to run for RSF because I loved Ruth and I believe passionately in what they do for families when they received a terminal diagnosis and the support they provide during the most painful of processes.

What’s the thing you can’t run without?
In my training it has been music, but on the day it will be Nashy keeping me entertained!

What is the longest run you’ve done in training?
A half marathon.

What will you be thinking about to get you over the finishing line?
A late lunch and a few cold beers! But also my daughter Lily – who is terminally ill with Batten Disease and has been for 10 years. Her courage and the fact that she has never complained despite losing everything are my inspiration.

Who do you think will make it across the finishing line first; you or Andrew Strauss 😉
SAS – he’s younger than me so he should beat me! Let’s hope we all get round safe and sound.

The freedom of being away from life’s challenges, and the knowledge that you are improving your fitness at the same time. I don’t need to speak to anyone when I’m running, and I love that!

What will you be thinking about to get you over the finishing line?
The people that I have lost that were close and dear to me (I always get emotional as I cross the line, and feelings just come out) but of course also the elation of my achievement…..and the fact that I can have a rest!

How much money we have all raised.

Who do you think will make it across the finishing line first; you or Andrew Strauss 😉
Straussy as he is a proper athlete.. Although I have known people way fitter than myself in previous marathons who I have finished before because anything can happen over 26.2 miles. It is never about time for me, always the Charities and how much we raise.

“We are so grateful to our marathon team for their incredible efforts in support of our charity. The London Marathon is a phenomenal and iconic test of endurance for our supporters and we are grateful beyond words for the energy and fundraising efforts of these individuals, taking on such an incredible challenge in our name, on one of the most significant days of charity fundraising and giving in the UK. Huge thanks to each and every one of you for your support and perseverance. The blood, sweat and tears shed on 3rd October will all go towards supporting families facing some of their own toughest tests, and we will be there to support you on the day. You can do it! #RunforRuth”
