Supporting families facing one of life’s toughest tests.
One of the toughest tests any family with children can face, is the news that a parent doesn’t have long to live. In the UK around 41,000 children under the age of 18 suffer the death of a parent each year; the equivalent of 112 each day. Ruth and Andrew fortunately found support to help prepare their family for Ruth’s death, but this help is not widely available and healthcare professionals often feel ill-equipped to guide parents on how to talk to their children about the incurable diagnosis and dying.
The Ruth Strauss Foundation’s mission is to ensure families facing the death a parent from cancer are offered professional emotional support, as well as raise awareness of the need for more research in the fight against non-smoking related lung cancers.
The Ruth Strauss Foundation Test Match
24 – 28 July 2020 | England v West Indies
We are overwhelmed by the number of supporters, fans, clubs and organisations who turned red throughout the Ruth Strauss Foundation Test in support of our #RedforRuth campaign.
From supporters posting pics on social in red; players wearing RSF Test shirts and Red Caps; #RedforRuth branding around Emirates Old Trafford; swathes of Manchester including the Manchester’s Printworks Centre turning red; to the Department of Health & Social Care building lighting up in red.
Twitter gave us a custom emoji which saw our robin sitting proudly next to the hashtag #RedforRuth and with the sheer number of people tagging us in posts, we even saw #RedforRuth trending on social media over the weekend!
Sir Andrew Strauss: “I’m delighted and overwhelmed at the generosity of cricket fans over the past five days. We had no idea what it was going to be like with no fans and we are so grateful to everyone. This is beyond anything we could have hoped for and is going to make a real difference to people and families.”
