A Ride for Ruth

Andy ‘Jonah’ Jones decided to cycle 400 miles, from Surrey to Northumberland, in support of The Ruth Strauss Foundation.

“I had the pleasure of knowing Ruth, so I was just as devastated as everyone with her passing and wanted to contribute to RSF in some way.

For years now I have set myself challenges and goals, from running through the Sahara to kayaking the Thames. I figured that the challenge needed to be suitably daft to encourage people to sponsor me. My in-laws live in Northumberland, so I planned a 400 mile route to cycle up to them, but rather than doing it over multiple days, the challenge was that it was going to be non-stop and entirely self sufficient.”

The first 12 hours saw temperatures as high as 36 degrees, and the 300 miles of headwind was an inconvenience – to put it mildly!

It was a very long ride, but fatigue was never an issue as I was preoccupied by focussing on the route and constantly battling against dehydration and nausea. However, wearing the RSF wristband, I often found myself chatting to Ruth and felt it was a team effort between the two of us throughout. The welcome I received at the end of the ride, and the generosity of friends, family and colleagues, made the challenge one of the most rewarding things I have done, and am pleased to have been able to make a small contribution to the Ruth Strauss Foundation.” – Andy ‘Jonah’ Jones
